Default How is your school run?

How do you run your school, or how is your school run? Is it a dictatorship? A democracy? Somewhere in the center?

Would you change something? What? I'm asking as both a former forum moderator and a school owner.

Thoughts?

MAF, I didn't like how it was being run so I politely stepped down. Because I have students and long time friends who are still posting, I'm still a member and try and contribute on a regular basis. I can post the site but I don't want to promote another forum on a forum.

same type of thing brought me here.... then i kinda just took over it is easy to ensure that everything is run how you like if you run the place

if you have any suggestion feel free to message me or post in the suggestions section..... just keep in mind that we are still growing so we can't live up to the a really busy forum....... yet

back to the other topic..... although i do not run a school, i do run a club. i was trying to run it as a democracy type thing, but that did not really work well. now i am trying to make the club more formal and structured but with the input of everyone. i find that people need direction, and if you are not clear on what you want to accomplish everyone gets confussed and frustrated.... but no, i do not rule with an iron fist, that is not my style.

Sensei runs his dojo pretty strictly, but more as a paternal figure in a family than as a despot.

I agree with Disgruntled that even clubs need to be run with some sort of direction. Without it, bad things are likely to happen. At best, people are going to get confused and lack direction. At worst, one or more members are going to kind of take over and teach poor techniques (I've seen it happen in a dojo where the sensei wasn't strict enough.)

The best clubs/schools/orgs out there are not democracies but dictatorships. When class is in session I am El Douche, when we're talking business - my wife and I have a Clinton thing going. In the Hwa-Rang TKD world, Grand Master Jack Pierce is in charge – and if anyone wants to discuss it he loves to put on his sparring gloves and take a meeting….lol

Disgruntled, as for the forum - what do you want? Large or small? Would you like only martial arts discussed or kind of a martial arts based life in general discussion group? Most of the big boys out there (KF, MAP, MT) are MA based but you can bring up about any topic (that is accept for KF, bring up the wrong topic and you’re kicked off – happened to me). My only suggestion is have everything in place before you go big, if that’s what you want to do. You probably already have one set up, but have a place where you can discuss issues with your moderators, only for you and them….just so you're all on the same page. When I had my falling out with the MAF group, not one of my students or friends knew about it – because we had that safe place to go. If you want to stay small, I think you’re there. I was a part of BHMA and that group is by invitation only. Gotta be invited and sponsored in. It’s a slow quiet group, nice if that’s what you want.

If there is anyway I can help – don’t hesitate to ask.

growth is always the goal, but not at the expense of the members.... which i think a lot of forums over look. i want it to stay MA based (and yes you are right we have a moderator area). but i really want to keep the forum accountable to the members. i don't want to become so obsessed with growth that i discourage quality posts and members.

I take it that you've visited the village primary school and talked to other parents in the village to come up with your opinion that it isn't good enough for your child, however, 'isn't that great' doesn't sound damning - why not take your youngest to the village school (if nothing else it will help them start to make friends in their immediate locale made necessary by the house move) and let your eldest travel on the school bus/commercial bus service to and from secondary school - an essential skill in learning how to be a little more independent from their parents.
