However, there is a link to kendo (actually, more kenjutsu) that goes beyond philosophy. The founder of aikido realized that many, if not all, of the movements made with a sword translated into excellent movements made when directing an opponent's body around. Essentially, in the same way that you swing/pull a sword in order to cut an enemy, you may also swing/pull an enemy to bring him to the ground. This is why many aikido schools also practice with swords.

Modern Aikido does make referance to Kenjutsu....however they are not based on each other.... schools that use that practice, are training in what they call a varied, or interpretive style. That is not to say they are not practicing "proper" Aikido.... however traditional Aikido itself was in no way derived from any form of kendo.... it was an after thought.
The idea was to "Control aggression, without inflicting injury, is the Art of peace" - Ueshiba
It was an unarmed defense only style.... that like all fighting arts has evolved with the generations.
Also... and Im sorry I don't remember all the comments.... but be careful what books you get your information from.... if you want a real, and accurate book on Aikido, there is a great reference book available from the Japanese Natural Museum.... it is available in English....

Just a side note.... but I thought this thread was about Judo lol

And also, they have to have the Uke corroborate with them in order to complete the technique! If they tried to execute a technique like that on the Street They Would Loose! The Attacker is just going to get back up and Kick the S*** out of them! But, Thats MODERN AIKIDO!!!!

Then, you have "Traditional Aikido" Which Executes their techniques much the same way that "Combat Hapkido Does"! And that Does Work On The Street! "You have to at least Knock the Breath out of the Attacker, so they can not get back up and do you real harm".

That, is why I asked you to view those films, so you could see that there is more then one style of Aikido!
There is a saying that goes like this; In Modern Aikido, the Uke Laughs when being thrown. In Traditional Aikido, the Uke Screams when taken down!!!

Disgruntled; There is No Such Thing As Being Nice To Someone That Really Wants To Harm You - You have to cause some Pain at least in order to end it!

Only people that have Never been in Harms Way will think they can end a confrontation peacefully!

As I noted.... If you want to know the meaning, and intent of Aikido , listen to its founder .....
"Seek to neutralize your aggressor, without causing harm", " To Control aggression, without inflicting injury, is the art of peace" - Morihei Ueshiba

I find judo a bit confusing as the rules forbid you to do all the things you would have to do to overcome an opponent.

a judo student once told me (or rather beat me over the head saying over and over) judo is not a martial art. it is not meant for combat. it is a system to defect energy and a sport.

she meant that the system is designed not to harm people. and i think that it is more meant as a sport than a system of defense/attack

I truly believe Judo is beautiful and very effective. It came from jujitsu which is very aggressive. It's not as soft as many say. Judo works on the streets. If you train it in the traditional way, you learn how to throw opponents even if they don't have their "Gi" on because that is practical. And about Aikido, what i've heard is that at first, all the movements were designed to defend AGAINST a sword. But it just so happens that it works against anything.

i did not hear the sword thing, but i do know that the ultimate goal is to defend without harming at all.

Aikido practitioners have two choices...can throw without harming...or throw and break...

yeah that is the thing that bugs me about aikido and it claim that it is so great because they do not harm people. they only do not harm people if the person know how to fall and roll out of the throws. most regular people would be thrown and broken
