Default Mas Oyama

How many of you have heard of Mas Oyama, supposedly one of the greatest karateka of all time? If you have heard of him, what have you heard or read?

He was notorious for his toughness and he specialized in realizstic, heavy contact sparring. There is film footage of him showing him to be the real deal

couple years ago i went to the caribbean to visit family an was hanging out with my dad. he was a martial arts instructor before he joined the military and when he came back he continues to practice but doesnt teach cause he focuses on his career and side recreation we were talking about he arts and i knew that he did shotokan and kyokushin an crosstrained in TKD when he was stationed in Korea

but i didnt know that Mas Oyama was his teacher. that was a surprise when he mentioned that. the first time my dad met him he went to the karate school to start training and when he stepped into the dojo he saw dudes getting punched and thrown across the dojo by some muscular looking Japanese guy, this had an inspiring effect on him an his childhood friends who also came to train.

Hmmm...your dad was born in the 1500's? Mas Oyama isn't part of this generation.

Oyama was born in Waryong, 臥龍 in what is now South Korea, during Japanese occupation and subsequent annexation of Korea. His parents were Yangban (nobility) in the region where he was born.[1] At a young age he was sent to Manchuria to live on his sister's farm. Oyama began studying martial arts at age 9 from a Korean man who was working on the farm. He was not a strong boy growing up in Korea and his older brother was worried about him, so he taught him boxing.
