They are the same thing arent they?

Maybe im wrong but i just thought some people spell them a little different but they all have the same premises. I may be totally wrong though.

Same thing, just different spelling according to what country etc is talking about it.
Japanese probably spell it different to Americans would.

They may differ slightly. Sometimes the slightest differences can mean something is called something different.

I bet it would not be noticable to the average person though.

I dont think the difference in the spelling is of any consaquence, from what I've seen, theres 5 possible spellings....
Jujutsu
jujitsu
ju jutsu
ju jitsu
and jiu jitsu
All five are described as the same martial art, and that it really is just down to spelling.

I always thought that it was the same style just spelled differently. Similiar to how there is kenpo and kempo where they are the exact same thing but just a variation in spelling.

Most of the time its just a variation in spellling.

Some Wing Chun clubs use a different spelling aswell.

Wing Chun

Wing Tsun

Ving Chun

But they all teach the same art, maybe slight variations in technique.

I spell it Jiu-jitsu but I think I should be spelling Ju-jitsu because Ju means soft in japanese and in terms of martial arts this repersents throws, locks and ground work.
Go means hard i.e striking etc which is why goju ryu is hard soft becuase altough it is karate as has lots of striking they also are one of the few karate styles that are big on groundwork. so I don't know where the jiu came from since most other style use the soft part i.e Ju. in there maybe the spelling Jiu was just a mistake. Hope that helps

The issue of spelling comes from the knowledge of the art being brought to the West before a specific system of translating Japanese characters was brought.
Any of the spellings are now kind of accepted, though, if I got my hands on the writing of words, I could have my wife come up with the "official" spelling of it.
