They can be used for climbing wooden walls (sheer wood is a pain to climb, but you can easily sink spikes like this into it).
They can also catch an incoming sword blade (not something I would like to do, but it would be better than trying it with your bare hands), and be used to strike someone.

how would you climb up the wood? would you plam strike it to get them to stick in and go up that way? it still seems hard.... the other things sound fairly practical.

I'm not entirely sure how the climbing works. My guess is that they are meant to supplement normal climbing skills. Modern climbers have similar implements that are meant to do the same thing.
